How to Make Money With a Wishlist Using Your Own Affiliate Links

A wishlist or gift guide with your own affiliate links earns you a commission when people buy through it. Here is how to set one up on wishdo, which programmes accept creators without a website, how to share and label the link, and what the numbers really look like.

Who wrote this. The wishdo.io team, so the examples use wishdo. wishdo doesn't pay creators or take a share of their commission. Programme terms come from the programmes' own pages as of 26 October 2026; where a source was unclear, we say so.

The short version

  • Join an affiliate programme that accepts social media creators, such as Amazon Associates, Awin or impact.com.
  • Add your wishdo page to the programme and fill a public collection with your affiliate links.
  • Share one link and label it as an ad.
  • When someone buys within the programme's time window, the programme pays you. wishdo keeps your link as it is and takes nothing.

A worked example. You publish a Christmas collection of ten toys and home gifts from Amazon US, about $40 each. Amazon pays 3% on those categories, so a sale earns you $1.20. In one public case, the fashion writer Emilia Petrarca reported that links in two issues of her newsletter drew about 1,740 clicks; 4 readers bought, and she earned $25.64 in total. At that rate, 1,000 clicks bring 2 or 3 buyers: about $3 if each buys one gift, more if they buy several things. From a first collection, expect a few dollars or a few tens of dollars, not hundreds.

Ideas for other people

A collection is a set of ideas for someone else. Create one and add ideas to it.

Why gift lists sell

Stanford research found that people value the gifts they asked for more than givers expect, which is why requested gifts land better. Gift shopping is also moving onto social media: 59% of consumers in Deloitte's 2025 US holiday survey planned to use it. Affiliates and partners, influencers included, drove 20.4% of the $257.8 billion spent online in the 2025 US holiday season (Adobe). And 38% of holiday shoppers start before October (Bazaarvoice).

How the money flows

Your link goes from the programme to your collection and on to the shop unchanged. The programme pays you; wishdo takes nothing

Your link goes from the programme to your collection and on to the shop unchanged. The programme pays you; wishdo takes nothing

An affiliate programme gives you a personal link and pays you when someone buys through it within its time window. On wishdo the path looks like this:

  1. You add a product to a collection with your affiliate link and switch on "This is my affiliate link".
  2. A follower taps through to the shop and confirms with "Go now" in the "Leaving wishdo.io" window. Nothing redirects on its own.
  3. The shop opens through your link, exactly as you pasted it. In a web browser it sees that the click came from wishdo.io: the site's address, never your page's.
  4. If they buy within the window, the programme pays you.
Before the click, the wish page and the “Leaving wishdo.io” window tell the buyer that the author may earn a commission

Before the click, the wish page and the “Leaving wishdo.io” window tell the buyer that the author may earn a commission

What wishdo does: hosts the page, labels the wish, counts link clicks for each wish, and lets friends reserve gifts on wishlists so nobody buys the same thing twice. What it doesn't do: pay you, take a share or swap your link for its own.

Copies keep your link. If a follower saves one of your ideas to their own wishlist and their friends buy it from there, the click still goes through your link.

Beyond your followers. Public profiles and lists with at least five wishes go into the sitemap wishdo gives Google. What public profiles add can also appear in the Explore feed, and wishdo suggests creators under "Who to follow".

Where wishdo earns. Only on products from its brand catalogue and its editorial gift ideas, through its own links, which carry the "Ad" label too. If you save such a product, the link stays ours even with the switch on. To earn on it, add the product with your own link.

One limitation. The wishdo app opens shops in a built-in browser that sends no referrer. The click still goes through your link, but the shop can't see that it came from wishdo.

From zero to your first collection in seven steps

Steps 1 and 2 happen once. Each new collection after that takes steps 3 to 6.

1. Pick a programme that accepts your platform

Start with one. Amazon Associates suits an audience that already shops on Amazon; a network such as Awin or impact.com gives you many brands through one account.

2. Add your wishdo page to the programme

Programmes want to know every place your links appear. Amazon allows tagged links only on sites listed in your account and reviews each one: it should be public, with about 10 original posts. Awin wants every channel added as a promotional space, and Admitad accepts only resources you own. Add your profile address, such as wishdo.io/@yourname. No programme we checked says whether a wishlist page qualifies, so if in doubt, ask.

3. Create a collection for one occasion

On wishdo, a collection holds ideas for other people; a wishlist is what you want yourself. Name the collection for one occasion and one person, such as "Gifts for a new dad under $50", and let everyone see it. If you use Amazon links, add Amazon's required sentence to the description.

Paste each link from your programme into the wish form; the name, photo and price usually fill in by themselves. To save products from any shop as you browse, use the browser extension, the Telegram bot or the iPhone and Android app, then check that each saved link is your affiliate link.

5. Switch on "This is my affiliate link"

The switch is under "More settings" in the wish form. When a pasted link looks like an affiliate link, such as Amazon with a tag, Awin, Admitad, CJ, Rakuten, impact.com, eBay Partner Network, LTK or ShopMy, wishdo also offers it right under the link. The wish then shows an "Ad" label wherever it appears. If you change the link later, the mark comes off, so switch it on again.

Put the collection's link in your bio, a story, a video description or a pinned comment, and say in the post itself that it contains affiliate links. The "Ad" label on wishdo covers the collection, not your post.

A public collection: every wish with the author's affiliate link shows the “Ad” label

7. Check what people click

Statistics show reach; views of your profile, wishes, lists and collections; link clicks for each wish; saves, reservations and gifts given; followers; and visitors' sources and countries. A product with clicks but no sales needs a better price, photo or note.

Which affiliate programmes accept creators without a website

You don't need a blog: most programmes accept social media accounts, some with a follower minimum. Terms were checked on 26 October 2026; "n/a" means we couldn't confirm it.

None of these programmes explicitly allows or bans links on a wishlist site: register your wishdo page as your own, and don't hide where clicks come from. Amazon also runs separate programmes for the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and Poland. Etsy's help pages blocked our checks: its 7-day creator window and its move from Awin to Rakuten come from search snippets, and some 2026 blogs say 2%, so confirm with Etsy.

  • Instagram. Your bio and a link sticker in stories. Since late March 2026, creators in the US, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Thailand can tag up to 30 affiliate products per Reel through Impact, Rakuten or Shopify Collabs; who qualifies isn't clear yet.
  • TikTok. Your bio. TikTok Shop is a separate programme with its own links. More in our guide to tools for TikTok creators.
  • YouTube. The video description and a pinned comment. YouTube Shopping tags products inside your videos: it needs the YouTube Partner Program and 500 subscribers, and pays through AdSense 60–120 days after a purchase.
  • Pinterest. Affiliate links are allowed if you're open about them; paid partnerships need #ad or the paid partnership label.
  • Telegram. Your channel. Admitad accepts Telegram channels as ad spaces.

A gifting calendar for the whole year

Gift guides sell all year, not only in December. People buy for a date, so publish each collection a few weeks before it.

What makes a list people buy from

  • 6 to 12 products. That's the range Awin suggests for a gift guide: enough to choose from, few enough to read.
  • One occasion, one person. "Gifts for a new dad" tells readers at once whether the list is for them.
  • A price ladder. Something small, a few mid-range picks and one treat.
  • Your own note on each item. Why you picked it and who it suits. A shop page can't say that.
  • Your own photos where you can. The thing in use says more than a studio shot.
  • Fresh links. Before each season, remove sold-out items and click every link.
  • Room to save. Followers can save an idea to their own wishlist, where friends reserve it, and the copy keeps your link.
  • At least five wishes. From five, public profiles and lists go into wishdo's sitemap.

Honest maths: what a gift guide earns

Most affiliate income is small: in Influencer Marketing Hub's survey, 57.55% of affiliates earn less than $10,000 a year. Here is what one sale is worth at Amazon US rates:

Category Amazon US rate Example price You earn per sale Sales for $100
Luxury beauty 10% $60 $6.00 17
Clothing 4% $50 $2.00 50
Toys and home 3% $40 $1.20 84
Grocery 1% $30 $0.30 334
Gift cards 0% $50 $0 never

Sales need clicks. In the newsletter case, about 1,740 clicks brought 4 buyers, roughly 1 in 435. At that rate, the 84 toy sales you need for $100 would take about 37,000 clicks, if each buyer buys one gift. Income grows with traffic and trust, not with the number of links. What moves the numbers:

  • An occasion and a date. People buy gifts to a deadline.
  • Trust. Your notes and your own use of the products matter more than how many there are.
  • Longer windows. Amazon and eBay count 24 hours, Awin brands typically 30 days, and impact.com's 2025 data shows shoppers researching for weeks before buying in early December.
  • Higher rates. LTK and ShopMy rates, roughly 10–30%, beat Amazon's, if you meet their follower minimums.

Rules: labelling, Amazon and taxes

In most countries, a link that earns you money counts as advertising. Label it clearly, next to the link and before the click, in the language of the post; the FTC warns that a platform's built-in label might not be enough. On wishdo the switch labels the wish, but your posts are up to you.

Where What to write Not enough
US (FTC) "ad", "advertisement" or "sponsored"; by a link, "Paid link" or "I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post"; in a video, say it and show it "sp", "spon", "collab" or "thanks" on its own; a note only in your profile or behind "more"
UK (ASA, CMA) #Ad, #Advert or #Advertising, at the start "Sponsored", "Aff", "Gifted", "Collab"
Germany "Werbung" or "Anzeige" as the first word; by an affiliate link, an asterisk with the explanation right beside it "ad", "sponsored by", a shopping-cart icon on its own
Czechia (ČOI) "reklama", "sponzorovaný obsah" or "placené partnerství" at the start, in the language of the post "Spolupráce s…" on its own
Ukraine "реклама" (advertising); hidden advertising is banned —
Rest of the EU No set wording; the commercial intent must be clear —
Amazon (.com, .co.uk, .ie) "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." in your bio and in your wishdo profile or collection description, plus a label such as "(paid link)" or "#ad" by each link. The German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Turkish and Brazilian stores require their own sentence in their language The sentence alone, with no label by the links

Since April 2025, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority has been able to fine up to 10% of global turnover.

Four Amazon rules that matter on a wishlist

  • Only on registered pages (section 6(b)). Tagged links may appear only on sites listed in your Associates account. Amazon doesn't say whether a wishdo profile counts, so list it and ask. Copies of your ideas on other people's lists keep your link, a case the agreement doesn't cover either.
  • Not for friends and family (6(u)). You may not "permit, request or encourage" friends or relatives to buy through your links, so keep your tag out of your own birthday list. Amazon does suggest streamers share a wish list with their tag: the rule is about who you ask to buy.
  • 24 hours. Items added to the cart within 24 hours of the click count, as long as they're ordered within 89 days.
  • No hidden sources (6(v) and 6(w)). Don't hide where a click came from, and don't use shorteners that hide the destination. On wishdo the visitor taps "Go now", and in a browser the shop sees wishdo.io.

Gifts from fans. On Amazon lists, givers see your name, city and state, and since 25 March 2026 third-party sellers receive your address. wishdo doesn't handle delivery either, so use a PO box or another non-residential address, never your home.

Taxes

Affiliate income is taxable. In the US, self-employment tax of 15.3% applies once net earnings reach $400 a year, and Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC are issued from $2,000 for payments after 2025, though all income must be reported. In the EU, income tax is national, and the small-business VAT exemption is capped at €85,000 in your own country and €100,000 across borders. This is general information, not tax advice: ask a local adviser.

LTK and ShopMy pay you themselves, often at higher rates, but they choose who joins. A wishdo collection is a free page for the links you already have.

Service Who can join Who pays you Shops Whose links
wishdo Anyone, free Your own programmes; wishdo pays nothing and takes nothing Any shop Yours, as you pasted them
Amazon storefront and Idea Lists Amazon Influencer Program: a YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or Facebook account, reviewed; no published follower minimum Amazon, at standard Associates rates Amazon only Your Amazon tag
LTK By approval; 5,000+ followers outside the US and Canada LTK, from retailer commissions of 10–25% on average LTK's retailers LTK links
ShopMy 1,000+ followers to apply ShopMy, typically 10–30%, weekly from $11 ShopMy's brands ShopMy links
Link-in-bio tools Anyone Your own programmes Any shop Yours

What wishdo adds is the gifting side: reservations on wishlists, and followers saving your ideas with your link in place. It also recognises LTK and ShopMy links, so you can put them in a collection where those platforms allow it. For gift list apps side by side, see wishlist apps compared.

For brands and makers

Creators earn on your products only with their own links, so the way into their gift guides is an affiliate programme they can join.

  • A free brand profile. Your name, logo, description and website, shown in the brand catalogue and search after a manual check. Everything that works today is free for brands; here is how to set up a business profile.
  • Your products as gift ideas. With photos, descriptions and prices, ready for people's wishlists and collections.
  • A programme creators can join. On a network they already use, such as Awin or Admitad, accepting social media and wishlist pages.
  • Statistics. Product views, clicks to your website, additions to lists, reservations and followers.

Mistakes that cost you commission

  • No label, or a hidden one. In a 2024 EU check, only 20% of 572 influencers labelled their ads consistently.
  • An Amazon tag on a page Amazon doesn't know about. List every page first.
  • Your tag in your own birthday list. That's asking family to buy through it.
  • Shorteners or redirects that hide the source. Amazon and eBay forbid them.
  • Saved catalogue products instead of your own link. On wishdo's brand products and editorial ideas, the commission is ours.
  • Stale products. Sold-out items and dead links waste the click.
  • Too many products. Past a dozen, a guide turns into a catalogue.
  • December only. Birthdays, weddings and babies happen all year.
